A Twisted Sense of God, Part 2
Artist: Fine Arts Militia, featuring Chuck D
Genre: Rap
Chuck D never holds back. And powerhouse rock/rap combo, Fine Arts Militia, drives this empassioned sermon home. Witnessing the lies and destruction perpetrated in the name of God, Chuck wants to know what kind of God some people are worshipping.
Money quote: "I guess 9-1-1 ain't no joke."
OHIO (originally by CSN&Y)
Artist: DEVO
Genre: New Wave
DEVO was formed by Kent State students Jerry Cassale and Mark Mothersbaugh in 1972. Mothersbaugh's theory of human regression, or "de-evolution", developed from an elaborate inside joke into a committed philosophy after he witnessed the Kent State massacre first hand. A new wave version of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's anti-war anthem might sound funny at first, but you'll notice they're not laughing.
Classic DEVO: "O ... Jeffery ... H ... Allison ... I ... William ... O ... Sandra."
Tock, Tick
Artist: Kurt Vonnegut and Simon Heselev
Genre: Spoken Word
WWII veteran and author, Kurt Vonnegut, reads a passage from his famous anti-war novel, Slaughterhouse 5. In it, his time-challenged hero, Billy Pilgrim, watches a war movie backwards as peace breaks out, bullets are sucked out of dead soldiers, and all the bombs are disassembled in factories and put back in the earth where they can never hurt anyone again. Simulataneously sad and funny.
Vonnegut's signature riff: "So it goes ..."
We Are The Living!
Artist: Sananda Maitreya
Genre: Post Millenium Rock
Sananda's Grammy-winning voice sold millions of CDs before he walked away from the demands of the pop music machine. The result is uncompromised creativity and the ability to react in real time. From his digital release, Angels & Vampires, here's Sananda's response to the violence around us.
Two lines: "Mothers are crying While Senators are lying."
Coming up on Washington
Artist: Final Approach
Genre: Alt Country
This song takes you inside the mind of a great American on each of three historic trips to the nation's capitol. As his thoughts and emotions zig-zag through exasperation, fear, hope, and pride, his focus remains a passionate yet peaceful commitment to freedom and justice. It's not too hard to figure out who it's about ...
Hint: "Feeling so alive ... August 6th, 1965."

Forget Who We Are (Video)
Artist: OHM
Genre: Rock
Forget Who We Are (Audio)
The intense video version of this song, which has aired on the BBC in the UK, has far more impact than anything you'll ever see on American television. It's the kind of art that "offends advertisers" and turns passive viewers into activists. Hopefully, you can handle it.
Definition of OHM: a unit of resistance.
